Disabled children are not animals

I came across an article today that honestly made my blood turn cold then boil! Cornwall County councillor Colin Brewer is said to have said and I quote
"disabled children cost the council too much money and should be put down", would provoke a response and a debate into the issue of service costs provision, but said he "did not get the reaction he wanted".

The article went on to say that he has returned home to consider his position. For me being a mum to a child that has a disability that will be with them for the rest of their lives, to read these words it is like being told my child does not deserve the air he breathes because of what? it costs the government too much! My son smiles, laughs, jumps, tells jokes, is full of warmth and compassion, he would do anything for anyone! He loves school, loves his friends, loves his family and they all love him too.

My child has as much right to be here as each and everyone of us placed on this Earth.

  1. Oh my god that is awful people with such evil views should be put down. It's alright for murderers and child abusers to be put in a safe cell at the taxpayers cost but a child with disabilities costs too much?

  2. It is a sad world we live in, it really is. I read another story of an elderly man who could not care for himself being fed mouldy jam sandwiches, I felt disgusted that our elderly are treated in such an appalling way.

  3. Oh no! It is sad and this is the world we've bought our children into.

    1. I am not sure what actually makes me feel worse, what he has said about disabled children(after all my son is well cared for) or the fact that an elderly man who's family and himself put all their trust in his caregivers only for him to be fed mouldy food.

  5. This comment blew me away yesterday when I heard about it too. How disgusting that a cretin like this has a loud voice in a community. My daughter has cost a fortune as she has had a number of surgeries and will probably require more major hip surgey throughout her life. How dare he imply she is not worth the cost.

    1. Sadly I am 100% certain he is not alone in his thoughts. I will protect my child from all negative things like people like this because he is worth all the money in the world. Who knows what his future hold but all I know is if he can dream it he can achieve it.

  6. Disabled does not mean unloved, unwanted, uncared for or not able to fit into society perfectly adequately. I agree no mater what their ability they are as human as the rest and have every right to be here.
My daughter who was on DLA until she was 14 has been through Uni and now holds down a very responsible job and pays tax back into the system that kept her when she was younger - does she not have the right to be here?

    1. I am really pleased your daughter has been able to achieve so much despite odds being stacked against her.
I hope he realises what he has actually said.

  7. I would really like to see him say that to the face of a parent who has a disabled child!! This has made me so angry! How dare he! I hate to say it, actually no I dont, I really hope someone smacks him in his uneducated mouth! (I don't condone violence normally) This Government really needs to get a grip or it wont be long before people start a revolution against them!!

    1. I just hope he never has to experience it 1st hand, most families who have a child or even a parent with a disability has to fight almost every step of the way to get anything they need.

  8. Maybe we could get a bus of us together and go and pay him a visit! If he thinks that our children should be put down maybe we should tell him people with his attitude should not share the same air as these wonderful children!

    2. Probably not...he obviously hasn't been around many disabled children and seen how 'normal' they are. Does that mean that people (adults) with hidden illnesses (ie, mental health issues etc) should be put down too...or is that acceptable to him?? Stupid man! I for one, and I'm sure those above on here, think he should be forced to step down for that comment!

    3. If it was a racist remark it would be a whole new ball game. The disabled have enough hoops to jump through just to get by without having opinions like this thrown at them too. Do they not realise many disabled children have the ability to read.

He should have been sacked on the spot. If you worked on a till somewhere and said that to a customer you would be instantly dismissed, yet someone in a position of power is allowed to merely say he regrets saying it (he clearly means he regrets getting CAUGHT saying it) and that makes it ok???

  10. My blood was boiling also, a disgrace, we are trying to educate our future in acceptance and understanding and this guy comes along who is still in the 19th century. Should be sacked and now x

  12. My feelings are just the same as yours. My son didn't chose to be disabled.

  13. This is so cruel of him to say that. Disabled children are also humans that deserve the same treatments as human, or even more special treatment. He should be thankful that he wasn't born disabled.
